“Social distancing” became a worldwide phenomenon in March 2020 in response to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. To see how the quarantine is impacting fitness and wellness behavior around the world, Verv has compiled key behavioral data from its 400,000-subscriber base.
Weight loss is a priority under quarantine
33% of Verv users chose programs dedicated to weight loss or body toning.
Movement preferred over meditation for stress-relief:
- 4% increase in physical fitness activities
- surprisingly, stress-relief activities like meditation declined by 4%
Time spent exercising outdoors went down:
An average of nearly 9 minutes
BUT the duration and quantity of fitness sessions have jumped.
Users trained an average of 1 minute more, and 20% of them completed 1 more workout than in the previous month
Afternoon workouts peaked
- An average of nearly 5% more people choosing to work out between noon and 7 p.m.
- While workouts between 8 p.m. and midnight decreased on average by 3%
Mediterranean, Middle East surged in fitness adoption
These three countries led the way in online fitness adoption:
Italy: 197%
Greece: 185%
Iran: 159%
